Arsenal hosts their London rivals Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday. The Gunners will be hopeful for a win in a fixture they have dominated in recent years. Mikel Arteta’s side currently sits second in the Premier League table.
The home side will be full of confidence after progressing to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. In the first leg of the Round of 16, they became the first away team in the tournament’s history to score seven goals in a knockout match. However, they could only manage a 2-2 draw in the second leg at the Emirates. Their last Premier League outing also ended in a draw, a 1-1 result against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Against a team they thrashed 5-0 in the same fixture last season, Mikel Arteta will be confident of securing another win. Here’s how they are expected to line up.
The Spaniard is Arteta’s undisputed No. 1 between the posts. He was fantastic against Manchester United last week.
Timber is the preferred choice over Ben White at the moment. He provided an assist against Manchester United and should start again on Sunday.
The French international is one of the best defenders in the world, and his partnership with Gabriel is crucial to Arsenal’s success.
Like Saliba, Gabriel has been one of Arsenal’s standout players. His ability to score from set-pieces is a key part of Arsenal’s gameplay.
Calafiori started against Manchester United last week, while Myles Lewis-Skelly got the nod in midweek. Expect the Italian to return to the lineup.
The captain is yet to hit his best form, having struggled to contribute goals and assists as much as he would like. However, against a shaky Chelsea defense, he will be eager to make an impact.
Partey is Arteta’s clear first choice to sit at the base of the midfield.
The England international’s ball-carrying ability is vital for Arsenal. He is also effective from set-pieces, having scored against Manchester United last week.
The 17-year-old has seized his opportunity in Bukayo Saka’s absence. With three goals and an assist, he has been a constant threat to opposition defenses and is expected to start again.
Since being deployed as a forward in the absence of Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, the Spaniard has performed well. His height and ability to hold up play will trouble Chelsea’s backline.
Trossard is expected to retain his place on the left wing despite Gabriel Martinelli’s return from injury. The Brazilian’s availability should push Trossard to maintain his high level of performance.
