Arsenal are keeping tabs on Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui ahead of a potential move, sending scouts to watch him in action against Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday night, according to Calcio Mercato journalist Maurizio Russo .

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta wants to keep strengthening their attack to make his team a force to reckon with in Europe, and it appears the 25-year-old Italy international has emerged as a target.

Retegui bagged two goals as Atalanta ran out 6-1 winners last night, and the Arsenal scouts would have been very pleased with his all-round performance.

The North Londoners are not the only ones keen on the Atalanta star, with Paris Saint-Germain also watching him as they identify targets in their bid to build their attack going forward.

Retegui has 14 goals and three assists in 19 appearances for the Serie A club so far in 2024-25 after finishing last term with nine goals and three assists, and his finishing is attracting Arsenal.

The Gunners want a new number 9 despite deploying Kai Havertz regularly in the position, and the Italian looks like the ideal signing.

Arsenal are also monitoring the situation of Bayer Leverkusen attacker Florian Wirtz ahead of the summer transfer window, and new additions to their frontline are expected next season.

Apart from his brilliant finishing, the 6ft 1in Retegui is also excellent in the air, a skillset which helps him to score headers regularly.

He is the type of centre-forward Arteta likes given his overall style of play and quality, and the Gunners could look to make a serious offer for him at the end of the season.

The former Genoa star will not come cheap as Atalanta will not be keen on losing him after just a season, and Arsenal must be ready to table a juicy offer if they want him.
