Mikel Arteta is unsure if Thomas Partey will be fit for Arsenal’s Champions League showdown with Real Madrid on Wednesday night.
Partey scored for Arsenal during their 1-1 draw with Brentford on Saturday, but he was forced off with just over 20 minutes to go.
Arteta confirmed after the game that the Ghana international had an “issue” that meant he had to be substituted.
Arsenal are now sweating on the fitness of Partey ahead of the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Real Madrid on Wednesday.
“We didn’t expect the issue with Thomas that we had to take him out,” said Arteta. “He felt something so we didn’t want to take any risks.
“We don’t know [the diagnosis], I haven’t spoken to the doctors yet. So they will check him now and see how he is.”

Arsenal are also waiting to see if Ben White will be fit for Wednesday’s trip to Madrid. The right-back was left out of the squad for Saturday’s draw with Brentford due to a knock picked up in training on Friday.
“Again, we don’t know [if White will be fit to face Real Madrid],” Arteta. “So he could not be in condition to be in the squad today and be selected. So we have a few days but we’ll have to wait and see.”
The Gunners are going into the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with a 3-0 lead.
Arsenal dismantled Real Madrid on Tuesday night in one of the best performances of Arteta’s time in charge. But the Gunners were largely flat on Saturday as Yoane Wissa struck to cancel out Partey’s opener.
“I think we tried and we had two quite clear situations to finish the action better,” said Arteta. “I think we have to be critical with ourselves, especially the way we concede the goal.
“Again, at Brentford, you know what happens. You have a free-kick, the goalie is going to put it there.
“From there trying to get a throw-in, from there trying to get a corner and then once you clear the ball, it’s a second-ball game.
“And in that second-ball game, we didn’t defend the space close to the taker well enough, and then it’s a lot to it because they did that really well, and it’s our fault.”

Arsenal were forced to play the final few minutes against Brentford with 10 men as Jorginho had to come off after landing on his ribs.
“He said he could not breathe properly, so it could be an issue with one of the ribs,” Arteta told Premier League Productions.
“It’s strange because if he can’t carry on, that means that that is something significant, I think.”
