Just like the first team, the Arsenal u18s had a home game against Fulham on Tuesday, with the two teams separated by just two points going into the fixture.

Fulham started the day in sixth, one place above Arsenal, but having played two games more. The young Gunners knew that a win would see them leapfrog their opponents with those two games still in hand.

It didn’t initially go to play, with a defensive error allowing Tom Wingate to give Fulham the lead. But Louis Zecevic-John scored a rebound equaliser in the 67th minute, before Max Dowman scored a powerful effort in the 80th minute to give Arsenal all three points.

As mentioned, the win only took Arsenal up to sixth in the table, but the team’s title hopes remain alive.

Adam Birchall’s side are eight points behind u18 Premier League South league leaders Southampton, but with three games in hand that could potentially see them moving one point ahead.

The young Gunners also have the games in hand necessary to overtake second-place Chelsea, third-place Crystal Palace, and fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur, meaning the only team they need to drop points are fifth-place Aston Villa.

Villa are level with Arsenal on points, but with a superior goal difference and two games in hand of their own. But Villa are on a poor recent run of league form and they still have to play Arsenal, giving Birchall’s side a chance to catch up on them a bit too.

Anyone involved in football will tell you they’d rather have the points on the board than a game in hand. Arsenal may have the capability to catch four of the five teams above them, but they have to win their extra games to do so.

Having said that, the team should feel motivated to keep their three-game winning streak going and to give themselves something to play for at the end of the season.

The team are next in action on Saturday, April 5th at 11:30 BST, playing away to Leicester City.
