Arsenal’s Katie McCabe praised Taylor Hinds’ bravery after she was subjected to sexually inappropriate comments during the weekend’s FA Cup clash.
Liverpool secured a victory over Arsenal at Meadow Park, but the match was marred by an incident in which Reds’ vice-captain Hinds was abused by a fan – prompting her and a teammate to immediately alert the officials.
McCabe condemned the abuse and commended Hinds for speaking out and handling the situation with courage, offering her full support.
“First and foremost, Taylor has been incredibly brave to raise the awareness around what was said to her in the crowd and raise the issue to the referee,” McCabe said.
“During the game, I actually didn’t know what was going on, but after speaking to her, we offered our full support from a player’s point of view.
“I know the club has launched an investigation into the said supporter who said what they said, but to see Taylor go through that was really difficult. We offer our full support as fellow players and from a club point of view as well.
“There is absolutely no place for it in our game.”
This season has already seen multiple instances of players facing abuse in women’s football.
In February, Chelsea captain Millie Bright was subjected to expletive-filled insults and later described the incident as “hugely disappointing,” reminding fans that “players are humans, the same as you.”
That same weekend, Manchester City forward Bunny Shaw was also targeted with horrific racist and misogynistic abuse, which left her taking a short period off for her mental health.
“Women’s football should be a nice environment and a safe space for people to come and enjoy themselves,” McCabe added.
“I think even the racial issues as well, with Bunny Shaw a few weeks ago. There’s no place for in our game and we need to eradicate that behaviour.
“It’s through strength, with Taylor speaking up, that can raise awareness around it and even the supporters around can call out those sorts of behaviours too.
“It’s important to make people aware of it so we can stop it from happening in the future.”
