Aston Villa explored a deal to sign Lille forward Jonathan David in the summer but could not reach an agreement with the Ligue 1 club.

David has entered the final season of his contract at Lille and was expected to move on in the summer transfer window amid interest from Europe. The 24-year-old scored 26 goals in all competitions last season and has netted 72 in 148 appearances in Ligue 1.

Chelsea are understood to have held talks with the forward’s representatives, while Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Manchester United were also linked.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Aston Villa also held discussions with David but were unable to find an agreement with Lille or the player.

David was viewed as a potential replacement for Jhon Duran, who was subject of approaches from Chelsea and West Ham.

David, who equalled Canada’s goal record against the USA last week, has revealed he has not ruled out remaining with Lille beyond this season.

“Right now, we’re speaking with (LOSC president) Olivier Letang about a possible extension,” he told The Athletic.

“We’ll see how that goes. I’m open to anything. I think obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best league in the world.

“And for me it’s not the Premier League or bust. I’m open to anything and every league has its challenges.”
