Aston Villa are the latest club to have joined the race to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

A host of Premier League clubs, including Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United, are all reportedly keen on the Brazil international, and now Villa are “contemplating” joining the chase.

The newspaper claims that Aston Villa are “monitoring” the situation of the 25-year-old forward who has scored 10 goals for Wolves in the Premier League this season. He has also registered four assists.

Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol says that it won’t be easy for Villa to secure his signature. To start with, they would need to sell a forward before making a move for another attacking player.

Villa have already signed Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia, and they would need to remain compliant with their PSR obligations.

That being said, the situation could easily change in the next few days.

Villa striker Jhon Duran is emerging as a target for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, while Real Madrid have reportedly joined the race to sign him.

The Villans rejected a massive £57 million bid from West Ham this week, but they might be tempted to do business if they receive a fee of around £70m-75m.

In such a scenario, they can use the money to sign Cunha.

Leaving aside the theoretical possibility, the real picture is something else. Wolves have made it very clear that the player is not for sale. He has two-and-a-half years left on his contract, and they are under no financial pressure to sell any of their key players.

Cunha is vital to their hopes of survival, and they want him to sign a new and improved contract.

The Brazilian would be a terrific addition to Villa’s squad. He can play as a central attacking midfielder, as a left midfielder and as a striker, and Wolves won’t lose him cheaply.
