Aston Villa have made an opening offer of €18m plus add-ons for Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen.

Unai Emery wants to add another attacking option to his squad this winter and Villa have made an early move to sign the Dutch international.

Malen has been informed he can leave Dortmund during the January transfer window but Villa’s bid falls short of the German side’s valuation. The Athletic are reporting that negotiations are ongoing between the two sides in a bid to find an agreement.

Aston Villa want to sign Malen to improve their threat in the final third. The Villans sold former record signing Moussa Diaby to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad in the summer, while Leon Bailey has struggled to replicate the performances of last season.

Strengthening the right flank has emerged as a priority for Villa, who sit ninth in the Premier League table. The Villans are six points adrift of the Champions League places after drawing with Brighton on Monday.

Malen features predominantly from the right but can also operate on the left and in a central role. The 25-year-old, who spent time in the Arsenal academy as a teenager, has scored 39 goals in 131 appearances for Dortmund.

Malen was Dortmund’s leading scorer in all competitions last season with 15 goals, but has lost his place in the side this season under new head coach Nuri Sahin. He has started just six games in the Bundesliga during the current campaign.
