Former Manchester City academy man Lukas Nmecha’s hopes of reviving his Bundesliga career this season unfortunately fizzled out. After collecting a brace off the bench against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 17, the VfL Wolfsburg professional tanked in a start against Bayern Munich the very next week. Another start against Borussia Dortmund on matchday 32 proven less than inspiring and Nmecha accomplished little in nine substitute appearances.

There was nevertheless some good news from the seven-times-capped German international on the final matchday of the season. Inserted into the starting XI by VfL interim head coach Daniel Bauer, Nmecha collected another goal against Gladbach. Nmecha’s 16th Bundesliga goal counted as the match-winner.The 26-year-old proved that he can still influence a match.

Where the road now leads for the once promising striker who saw his career derailed by a November 2022 horror injury and the after effects. Kicker reports that Nmecha isn’t necessarily opposed to continuing his career in Wolfsburg, but wants to see if his German club tends him a better contract extension offer. Nmecha’s current contract with the Autostädter expires at the end of the month.

Though a specific club isn’t named, Kicker also states that the former England U21 international has received an offer from the country that launched his career. The former Middlesborough and Preston North End player might be headed back to the Isle. Both Nmecha and his younger brother Felix (currently of Borussia Dortmund) grew up in Manchester after moving from their birth city of Hamburg.

Many an English club could be interested in snapping Nmecha up on a free.
