Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini feels that Inter Milan’s opening goal in the Supercoppa Italiana should have been disallowed.
The La Dea coach was in a bitter mood regarding the decisive goal from Denzel Dumfries speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset after the match, via FCInterNews.
Wingback Denzel Dumfries proved to be the hero on the night for Inter.
The 28-year-old scored both of the Nerazzurri’s goals in a 2-0 Supercoppa Italiana semifinal win over Atalanta.
And both of Dumfries’s goals were very memorable ones. The first was an overhead kick, while for the second it was an absolute rocket from the corner of the box with a first-time hit.
However, there was some controversy surrounding Dumfries’s first goal.
The Atalanta players appealed to referee Daniele Chiffi immediately after Dumfries had found the back of the net with his acrobatic effort.
There had been a possible push by the Inter wingback on Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini.
This had taken place immediately before Dumfries had scored. Scalvini tumbled to the ground, which allowed the Dutchman to get his shot away.
However, both Chiffi and VAR Rosario Abisso felt that there was no foul.
Evidently the officials saw it as a case of Scalvini going over too easily in a 50/50 challenge.
And that was not even the only problem with the goal in the view of Atalanta coach Gasperini.
“The first goal should never have been given,” he argued. “Firstly, the corner should not have been given.”
“Then, there’s the position of de Vrij in front of the goalkeeper,” he went on.
“And a clear foul on Scalvini, who’s unable to jump.”
“That’s too many episodes in a single action,” the Atalanta coach hit out.
“But having said that, once you go behind it becomes harder for us.”
Meanwhile, Gasperini explained why he made so many surprise changes to the starting eleven this evening.
“We’ve had a lot of demanding matches,” the Atalanta coach said.
“And then we came here for the Supercoppa. It was the right time to see how some of the players who haven’t had that much of a chance to play are doing.”
“We were facing Inter in the semifinal,” Gasperini furthermore added. “It was the right time.”
