Spanish giants Atlético de Madrid continued their undefeated run in the 2024-25 La Liga season with a comeback 3-1 win over local rivals CD Leganés.
Scorers: Sørloth 69′ 90’+10, Griezmann 81′; Noupa 34′
Coming into matchday 10, Diego Simeone’s men sat joint-third in the table and level on points (17) with Athletic Club, RCD Mallorca, and Villarreal.
However, despite being one of just two remaining sides having yet to taste defeat thus far in the league along with bitter rivals Real Madrid, Atléti were already seven points adrift of league-leading Barcelona, who are set for a top-six clash with Sevilla later today.
Early dominance and a handful of chances from Madrid would count for nothing when Leganés took a shock lead in the 34th minute through a well-struck goal from midfielder Yvan Neyou Noupa, after his thunderous strike beat Jan Oblak high at the near post.
It was the first shot on target for the visitors, who had not won in their last six league fixtures coming into the weekend, but enjoyed an unexpected one-goal lead at the halftime interval.
Madrid finally leveled matters through Alexander Sørloth’s cheeky backheel after Axel Witsel turned provider with a good run into the box, leaving Madrid more than enough time to find all three points on the day.
A second goal in the final 10 minutes of action would come from Griezmann with a deft touch at the near post to tap home Giuliano Simeone’s low cross from the right-side channel.
Sørloth would bag his brace in the final moments of added time with a close-range finish after a determined Álvarez danced his way through the Leganés defense before finding the Norwegian striker free in the box.
With that, Madrid now sits alone in 3rd on 20 points for the season and four points adrift of both Barcelona and Real.
