Atlético Mineiro beat Flamengo 2-1 during the first leg Round of 16 clash in the Copa do Brasil.
Scorers: Hulk 7′, Ademir 55′; Lázaro 81′
Following a 2-0 loss on Sunday, Flamengo slumped to yet another defeat against Atlético Mineiro in their first Round of 16 clash on Wednesday.
While they controlled the flow of the game on the pitch, the visitors struggled to convert their scoring attempts into goals. Pablo, Andreas Pereira and Gabriel Barbosa, in particular, all saw efforts fall short.
Meanwhile down at the other end, the hosts took their opportunities when they arrived to turn the match in their favour.
Hulk scored an audacious chip after only seven minutes to take the lead and then roughly 10 minutes into the second half Ademir doubled things with a thumping header.
Flamengo then made all five of their substitutions in attempts to turn the tie on its head.
Eventually, the decision proved to be worthwhile as Rodinei and Lázaro combined off the bench to make things 2-1.
The late push, however, couldn’t be repeated by the end of the 90 minutes meaning there is still everything left to play for heading into the second leg on 13 July but Atlético Mineiro hold the upper hand.
