It was announced earlier in the week that COH Sports had completed their takeover of Sheffield United. The new ownership has 100% control over the men's and women's teams, plus the hotel at Bramall Lane and all the real estate as well.

This brings to an end a very long fiasco, giving Blades fans the Christmas present which would've been top of their lists. Despite the saga dragging on throughout the season, the Yorkshire side finds themselves top of the tree over the festive period. Chris Wilder and his squad have done a superb job of ignoring all the noise behind the scenes and dragging themselves into a promotion race.

Now, businessmen Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, are joining the Blades' board as co-chairmen, and they have a transfer window coming up to crack on with. The big news couldn't have come at a better time for the Championship leaders.

Palmer, of course, made his name on the Blues side of the Steel City, racking up over 200 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday. But, that didn't stop the 59-year-old from voicing his approval of the takeover.

Speaking to FLW, Palmer was asked whether he thought the completion of COH's purchase of the Blades had come at the right time. The ex-Wednesdayite responded: "[It's] fantastic news for Sheffield United and, in particular, Chris Wilder. This is fantastic news for the football club.

"From my point of view, I think it's bad news for the rest of the Championship. They sit top of the table, two points clear, and they've had two points deducted.

"The job that Chris Wilder has done, considering everything that's gone on, has been fantastic.

"With this being said now, Sheffield United will pursue to bring in [two or three]. Chris Wilder has come out and said 'I want to add two or three, I don't want to make wholesale changes.'

"I think Chris likes to work with a tighter squad, but he just needs one or two more quality players with experience on that pitch.

Wilder can now add to his squad for a promotion fight

As Palmer mentioned, this could be seriously concerning news for the rest of the Championship. The Blades are already leading the way, having overturned a two-point deduction. Now Wilder has more money to play with in his transfer kitty, a strong January could see the Yorkshire outfit run away with the title.

Of course, wholesale change to a squad that is already flying would be a pointless exercise, and could cost United promotion if the players didn't gel. This window is all about sensible business, and complimenting the balance that the 57-year-old has already created with his squad.

After the constant rumbling in the background of supposed takeovers, Wilder can now reap the rewards of the new ownership, thanks to his hard work during the negotiation stages. Sheffield United are in the best place possible to gain promotion, which allows him to add to the squad to get the push over the line.
