After a lengthy weather delay and a rip-roaring 90 minutes, Manchester City suffered defeat at the hands of Barcelona in a penalty-shootout.

Pep Guardiola’s side dominated the possession from the very start, threatening with balls in behind to Erling Haaland throughout the opening 15 minutes.

The Blues appeared to take the lead when the big striker connected with a shot at the back post and the ball seemingly trickled over the line, but with no goal-line technology or VAR, no goal was given.

Having dodged a bullet, Barça took advantage when a slick team move was capped off by youngster Pau Victor, who shone throughout the night.

The Premier League outfit responded with a strike of their own however, as the impressive Nico O’Reilly finished from an acute angle to level the scoreline, though parity would not last long.

Barcelona found their way through City’s leaky defence once again less than 10 minutes later firing when Pablo Torre fired his shot past a soft-looking Ederson.

The star-studded City attack would not be denied for much longer however, as Jack Grealish lashed his effort from the edge of the six-yard box into the roof of the net.

With the scores level at the end of the entertaining 90 minutes, the two European giants went to penalties. A pair of Ander Astralaga saves on Kalvin Phillips and Jacob Wright were enough for the Blaugrana to earn the victory.
