Pre-season is supposed to be about fitness first and results second.
But when arch enemies Barcelona and Real Madrid come face-to-face, that friendly nonsense goes straight out of the window.
According to the Washington Post, the two LaLiga giants are set to face off in the United States this summer as part of the International Champions Cup.
Possible venues for the Stateside Clásico reportedly include the Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium or SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the future home of the LA Rams and LA Chargers.
If the game does go ahead, it will be the second time Barça and Madrid have met on US soil in recent years, following their ICC encounter at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium back in 2017.
But with the 24-team European Championship and the 12-nation Copa América coming up this summer, the ICC is likely to have a reduced format in 2020.
Last month, the owner of Relevant Sports – who put on the ICC – is understood to have met with the leading European clubs along with governing body Uefa to discuss adding a more competitive element to the tournament.
Hosting another fiery Clásico would certainly be one way to do it.
