Barcelona secured a thumping 7-1 victory over Valencia on Sunday night ending their poor streak in La Liga.

Despite Hansi Flick making a host of changes to the team, the Blaugrana showcased their quality and absolutely dominated their visitors at Montjuic.

One of the rotations saw Frenkie de Jong start in midfield in the absence of Pedri, who was out with gastroenteritis.

Having struggled for relevancy since his return from injury, De Jong had shown improvements in his recent appearances from the bench and justified Flick’s decision to start him vs Valencia with a solid performance.

De Jong addresses future

Barcelona have been on a renewal spree this month, having tied down Ronald Araujo and Gerard Martin to new deals while agreements have been secured with Pedri and Gavi as well.

However, talks with Frenkie de Jong, whose contract also expires in 2026, have not progressed with the club reportedly running out of patience with his agents.

As such, there are doubts about whether the Dutchman will remain at the club beyond this season or be sold in the summer.

De Jong gave an update on the situation after the win against Valencia, stating that for now he is only focused on playing and that the time for everything else will come.

“I feel very good at Barcelona. I’m just focused on the present, and then there will be time for everything,” he said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

Meanwhile, De Jong also acknowledged that he has left his physical issues behind and feels that he is 100% fit.

“I have been feeling good since after the Christmas break. I am 100% fit, and I have to prove that I deserve to play. I feel very good after scoring, and above all, I am happy with the victory,” said the Dutchman, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

The former Ajax player remains optimistic about the season ahead and the fight for the La Liga title.

“We can still win La Liga. We needed this win to build confidence for the coming weeks and to be able to fight for the competition, and today we played a great match,” he stated.

De Jong also highlighted Barcelona’s attacking strength but emphasised the importance of improving defensively.

“We are a team that scores a lot of goals, we attack well, and we need to keep this up. In the next match, we must keep a clean sheet,” he remarked.

Despite the convincing scoreline, De Jong was full of praise for Valencia’s level of play.

“Valencia is not a bad team; I believe they have a better squad than it seems. They deserve credit. We went through a rough patch, but now we must focus on starting to win again,” he concluded.
