Barcelona’s rising defensive talent, Pau Cubarsi, has already demonstrated remarkable maturity—both on and off the pitch.

This was evident once again when he found himself in a common situation for Barcelona players during interviews: having to choose a teammate for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.

With Lamine Yamal and Raphinha both in strong contention for the honour, and Pedri also having a chance, the young centre-back was asked to make his pick.

Cubarsi’s pick for Ballon d’Or

Despite sharing a close bond with Lamine Yamal, having grown up together in Barcelona’s academy and being part of the same generation, Cubarsi did not let personal relationships cloud his judgment. Instead, he took an honest approach.

When asked who he would give the Ballon d’Or to, Cubarsi did not hesitate in his response. Based on the performances so far this season, he named Raphinha as the deserving candidate.

“Right now, because of how the season is going, I would give it to Raphinha,” he said as quoted by SPORT.

When asked whether Yamal would be upset by this answer. However, Cubarsi confidently stated, “Lamine would also say Raphinha.”

Leaders within the team

Beyond individual accolades, the young defender also acknowledged Raphinha’s growing influence in the squad.

When asked about the leadership within the team, he once again highlighted the Brazilian as a “leader of the dressing room”. He also added Ronald Araujo’s name, recognising the Uruguayan’s strong presence within the team.

Cubarsi’s words reflect his thoughtful and measured approach, showcasing the same level of intelligence that has made him one of the most exciting defensive prospects at Barcelona.

While the debate over the Ballon d’Or will continue, the defender’s honest assessment reinforces Raphinha’s crucial role in the team this season.
