Frenkie de Jong has become the talk of the town in Barcelona lately in the wake of his brilliant performances since the turn of the year.

Initially struggling with fitness, form and lack of confidence, de Jong has managed to turn hate into adoration with consistent performances throughout the last few weeks.

De Jong’s solid performances have also positively impacted his status at Barcelona, with various reports claiming that even President Joan Laporta is now keen on extending his contract.

Barcelona face contract impasse with de Jong

However, reaching a contract extension with de Jong will be far from easy, as far as Barcelona are concerned.

As reported by Miguel Rico (h/t FCB World), negotiations with de Jong are currently at a standstill, majorly because the player is aware that a contract extension could come with a significant pay cut.

Indeed, Barcelona are determined to extend de Jong’s contract duration but are clear about the fact that the player should settle for a lower salary.

De Jong, after all, is currently one of the highest-paid players in La Liga, with a total salary standing at around €20 million.

It is perhaps safe to say that de Jong hasn’t done much to deserve such a high salary, even though a chunk of his pay package includes deferred dues.

Nevertheless, it appears Barcelona are going to make an effort to try and convince de Jong to extend his contract.

The player, for his part, is prioritising a stay in Catalonia. But whether or not he extends his contract depends on how much of a cut Barcelona are offering him.

For the time being, de Jong will look to focus on his performances and end the season on a high note. He still has a long way to go before he reclaims his spot as a regular for Barcelona.
