For weeks now, ever since the start of Euro 2024 and with the phenomenal performances of Nico Williams, rumours have been appearing linking the 21-year-old with a move to Barcelona.

On Monday morning, these rumours received a boost as club president Joan Laporta took to the radio to put forward his club’s intentions.

As per Relevo, who are quoting Catalunya Ràdio, Laporta said “Today we can afford to sign Nico Williams. We can afford a signing like Nico’s.

This is bombshell news for fans of the Catalan giants. Name-dropping a player like this is something that simply can’t be taken lightly, as it likely means that talks behind the scenes are set to take place.

This news comes only days before Hansi Flick will get to work at the helm of Barcelona, and will likely be music to the German’s ears.

It also comes after weeks of speculation around the financial well-being of the club, which led many to believe that this summer’s transfer window could be quite a conservative one for Barcelona.

For now, all that we can do is watch and wait, as we are surely set to see plenty more reports of negotiations between Barcelona and Athletic Club over the weeks to come before La Liga is set to begin once again.
