The fitness of Frenkie de Jong has turned from being a misfortune to a controversy now, as the midfielder continues to grapple with his ankle problems.

De Jong has been out of action since April when he picked up an ankle injury against Real Madrid. He subsequently missed the European Championship and it appears opting for conservative treatment has weighed in heavily on the midfielder.

De Jong’s prolonged spell on the sidelines has led Barcelona to suggest undergoing surgery, but the player has been reluctant to do so.

De Jong won’t undergo surgery

To that end, a recent report from RAC1 has offered an update on the fitness of de Jong, claiming that the Dutchman has decided not to undergo surgery.

This is a major development, considering the fact that it may have a wide-ranging implication on the midfielder’s recovery process.

In fact, the Dutchman has been ruled out of action for Barcelona’s upcoming matches against Girona and AS Monaco.

This contrasts with earlier expectations of de Jong potentially returning to action after the international break.

When will de Jong return?

As per the report, there is no specific date set for de Jong’s return to action and the matters have been complicated following his decision not to undergo surgery.

The player, for his part, is determined to avoid surgery and wants to continue his conservative treatment.

The Dutchman is likely to continue individual work in order to improve his fitness, with the hope of recovering by October.

However, given the delicate nature of his ankle injury, the midfielder must remain cautious, knowing any little knock may aggravate his problems.
