La Liga giants Barcelona have taken a step back in their pursuit of a long-time transfer target.

That’s according to The Athletic, who point towards Nico Williams as the player in question.

The name of wide-man Williams, of course, took its place front and centre in the media headlines throughout the summer transfer window.

This came with the 22-year-old’s continued excellence for club and country alike having sparked widespread interest in his signature.

Barcelona, for one, pushed hard to bring Nico in for much of the summer, eager to unite the Spanish international with close friend Lamine Yamal.

In the end, the talented attacker opted to stay put, rewarded for his commitment with Athletic Club’s no.10 jersey.

Rumours have nevertheless continued to swirl, though, that Deco and co. are preparing to reignite their efforts to bring Nico in for next season.

In turn, it may come as something of a surprise to hear of the exact opposite this week being reported in England.

As per a report from The Athletic:

‘It appears Barcelona — with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal doing well — are not there for Nico, which increases the chances of a Premier League switch and he is more open to that than previously.’
