Barcelona sue Zenit St. Petersburg over unpaid Malcom fees | OneFootball

The powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona have this week moved forward with a legal case against Zenit St. Petersburg.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who have today provided an insight into the latest developments in the case.

Barcelona’s complaint comes in relation to the deal which saw Malcom make his way to Russia with Zenit back in the summer of 2019.

The Blaugrana allege that they are and have been owed an extra €490,000, as part of the agreed upon bonuses in the contract drawn up.

As per Sport’s report:

‘The reason for the disagreement comes from the fact that this bonus was to be collected by FC Barcelona in each Zenit qualification for the group stage of the Champions League, as long as the Brazilian played at least half of the matches in the Champions League competition.’

World football’s governing body, FIFA, however, threw a spanner in the works last year, in coming to the conclusion that Zenit should not be required to pay up, after being excluded from European competition in 2022/23 owing to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

But Barcelona have refused to accept this ruling.

In turn, they have presented their case in front of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the hearing for which has been scheduled for the 22nd of March.
