Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi grabbed all the attention, and deservedly so, after their stellar breakthrough campaigns at FC Barcelona last season.

But another La Masia product, Fermin Lopez, was another breakout star for the Blaugrana as he went from playing in the third division on loan at Deportivo Linares to becoming a part of Xavi’s team.

Fermin ended his debut senior season for Barcelona with 11 goals and an assist from 43 matches. Not stopping at that, he then led Spain to glory at the Olympics, scoring six goals and setting up two more in six matches.

Now, SPORT reports that Barcelona are working on handing Fermin Lopez an improved contract with a salary and terms that reflect his rapid rise and current status within the team.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder signed a new contract with Barça a little over a year ago, committing to the club until 2027 while being shielded by a €400 million release clause.

But considering the rise in stature he has enjoyed since then, the Catalans intend to reward their breakout star with improved terms and are already working on the same.

Fermin’s start to the 2024/25 season has been a tad slow as he returned late to the squad after pulling double duty for Spain at the Euros and the Olympics.

As such, he has played just 57 minutes across three games under Hansi Flick.

However, an unfortunate injury while away with the Spain Under-21 national team last week means that the youngster must have to wait to get back on the field – potentially until the end of this month.

Having enjoyed a brilliant breakout season, it is up to Fermin to prove that it was not a flash in the pan and become key in Flick’s setup as well.

Barcelona, for their part, have full faith in their academy ace, and as such are pressing ahead with the idea of an improved contract.
