From breaking into tears after Barça Atletic fell short of promotion last season in June, to becoming the toast of the town in Barcelona as part of the first-team setup a few months later, Marc Casado has come a long way.

The 21-year-old La Masia gem was in and around the senior squad previously but never really got a proper run under Xavi Hernandez.

Things have changed for him under Hansi Flick, though, with Casado establishing himself as a permanent fixture in midfield this season.

Spain call-up on the horizon

As such, SPORT reports that Casado appears set to be called up to the Spain national team squad for their upcoming fixtures against Switzerland and Denmark later this month.

Casado, 21, made his debut for the Under-21 Spanish national team during the previous international break and now could be poised to break into the senior setup under Luis de la Fuente, who has been tracking the young midfielder’s development.

Casado has been simply brilliant for Barcelona, especially in recent weeks, shining brightly in big games against Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and RCD Espanyol – registering an assist in each of the three matches.

The 21-year-old’s work ethic and ball-winning ability in midfield were always there but his vision and creativity have also come to the fore in the senior setup – with the midfielder now clocking five assists already.

Casado has established himself as a fixture in the team, leading to the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Gavi having to fight to force their way back into the side.

As such, the La Masia talent could soon be breaking into the Spanish national team as well, with De la Fuente considering calling him up for the upcoming international break.
