The Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship reached an agreement with Barclays that will see the high street bank continue its sponsorship of both women’s football divisions.

The new three-year deal, which takes effect from the end of this season, will see the partnership continue until 2028. Barclays will double its investment into the top two tiers to somewhere in the region of £15 million per season. This makes it the biggest deal in women’s domestic football history.

Barclays extends partnership to fuel growth in women’s football

To announce the deal, 14 mascots from clubs across the WSL, Championship and men’s Premier League met at Barclays’ London HQ to ‘sign and seal’ the contract. Arsenal’s Gunnersaurus even bumped into his friend Ian Wright in the lobby.

Speaking on the deal, the Arsenal legend and Barclays ambassador said: “We constantly talk about the sustainability of women’s football and the need for increased investment and long-term partners to truly accelerate the growth. Barclays are once again leading the way with their commitment. This investment is exactly what’s needed to not only continue the growth but to ensure the game is sustainable for future generations.”

WPLL secures milestone deal with Barclays

The new agreement marks the first deal signed since the Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) took over the top two leagues in August.

Additionally, Barclays and The FA renewed their partnership to promote equal access to football for girls. The Barclays Girl’s Football School Partnerships programme will continue until 2028. With refined goals, it will aim to provide more educational support to girls pursuing football.

WPLL Chief Executive Nikki Doucet was delighted to announce the deal, stating: “This record multi-year investment demonstrates long-term commitment and is important because it provides positive endorsement and increased support for what we are trying to accomplish.”

It wasn’t just the professional game that had reason to celebrate with this announcement.
