The upcoming Aston Villa game versus Preston North End will not feature Ross Barkley. Returning players and getting some back on track from injuries will be an important aspect to monitor. Throughout the club, returning to form will be the priority. AVFC is looking to finish strong in the Premier League. They will also push to win the FA Cup and advance in Champions League against PSG.
Although the midfielder hasn't seen the pitch due to a knee issue, he'll be eager to show his worth. Particularly if Villa are able to progress in the two competitions, Unai Emery will look to be able to turn to Barkley for depth and late-game substitutions.
Speaking with reporters, the boss gave an update, as shared by Birmingham Live:
"It is really bad the last two months for him while he has been injured. He is now so, so close to start training with us. Maybe even today, tomorrow, or Monday. He is feeling good now."
In a mostly positive message, the manager appears hopeful that Bakley will be ready to train soon. The veteran can provide needed experience at times. More importantly, he's someone Emery can trust if a change of pace or player in poor form needs to be subbed off.
The England international is about to complete the first season on a three-year contract with the club. Already with three goals in this year's EPL campaign, the midfielder will look to add one or two more, ideally in critical areas of matches in the closing moments of 2024-2025.
Currently sitting at 45 points and in ninth, Emery's side isn't playing in Europe next year as things stand. There are, however, plenty of points to be had and the ability to climb into a qualifying spot as of now. Barkley won't be able to suit up for Aston Villa against PNE, but it looks like he'll be able to play a role from there moving forward.
