Rangers FC have confirmed that Hall of Fame member and former captain Barry Ferguson will take charge of the men’s first team until the end of the season.

Rangers announced the decision following the departure of Philippe Clement, who exits alongside coaches Alex Rae, Colin Stewart, and Stephan van der Heyden.

Ferguson is a decorated figure in Rangers history with five league titles, five Scottish Cups, and five League Cups across two spells at Ibrox. The 47-year-old will be supported by a coaching staff comprising Issame Charai, Neil McCann, Billy Dodds, and Allan McGregor.

Meanwhile, Brian Gilmour will continue his role to strengthen the pathway between the Rangers academy and the first team.

Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart acknowledged Clement, saying (via the club website): “Philippe and his team have worked tirelessly in developing the squad, particularly the younger players.

“However, the issues we are facing run deeper than the manager. The ongoing football review seeks to address those challenges, and we will continue implementing its findings ahead of appointing a permanent manager.”

Stewart also emphasised the necessity of this managerial change, adding: “The team’s response following their early Scottish Cup exit was a major concern, and after back-to-back home defeats, the board felt action was required.”

Ferguson brings managerial experience from Clyde, Kelty Hearts, and Alloa Athletic to Rangers. He scored 60 goals in 431 appearances as a player.

His assistant, McCann, previously led Dundee and Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Dodds managed Inverness and was also an assistant coach of Ross County.

McGregor returns to the Gers, where he had a distinguished goalkeeping career. The trio have a combined total of 97 international caps and extensive experience in Scottish football.

Rangers face a crucial period, with upcoming fixtures including a home clash against Motherwell on Saturday, Europa League ties against Fenerbahce, and the Old Firm derby against Celtic at Parkhead on March 16.

Rangers remain in discussions with the San Francisco 49ers’ investment wing regarding a potential takeover, expected to be finalised between April and June.
