Bayern Munich sporting director Christoper Freund has admitted they’re confident of agreeing a new deal with reported Manchester United target Alphonso Davies.
The left-back position is believed to be an area of the pitch United are keen to strengthen either in January or in the summer transfer window.
All season, United have been unable to field a natural left-back amidst long-term injuries suffered by Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. In their respective absences, the likes of Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof have all temporarily played in that role.
Davies – whose contract with Bayern runs out next summer – is believed to be a player United are interested in.
Rarely are players of Davies’ quality available as free agents and his anticipated availability in a few months has unsurprisingly alerted a number of top clubs to the possibility of signing him.
Alongside United, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also thought to be admirers of the Canada international.
However, a recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United are not too enthused about meeting Davies’ wage demands. It was stated that the defender is looking for a salary of around £240,000-a-week and a signing-on fee of around £10m.
Freund gave an update on Davies’ situation at the Allianz Arena and indicated that there is optimism that an agreement can be found with the player’s camp over fresh terms.
The Bayern chief said [via Fabrizio Romano on X], “New deal for Davies? The confidence is there.”
“I’m positive about how much fun Phonzy is having at the moment. The style of play suits him.”
He added, “We hope that things will continue this way for a long time to come.”
The lightning-quick Davies would slot in perfectly in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system as a left-wing-back but United’s hopes of landing him would almost certainly be dashed if Bayern tie him down to fresh terms.
