Bayern Munich continued their good run of form in the Bundesliga on Friday as they clinched victory in the Bavarian derby against Augsburg. They came from behind to win 3-1 and extend their lead to nine points at the top of the Bundesliga table. Bayer Leverkusen can reduce this gap back to six points when they face Heidenheim on Saturday.

Considering the players available for this game, Vincent Kompany went with a strong starting XI to ensure that the team maintained winning momentum ahead of next week’s Champions League game against Inter Milan.

Die Roten started the game slowly as Augsburg maintained a compact defensive shape, giving the visitors very little space in the final third. Augsburg have the meanest defense in the Bundesliga since the winter break, conceding only four goals.

Bayern looked flat in the first 30 minutes, with few half-chances created here and there. The visitors woke up when Augsburg executed a brilliant free-kick routine. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw played a precise aerial pass from midfield to find Dimitrios Giannoulis’ run in the box. The Greek full-back hammered the ball past Jonas Urbig to give the home side the lead in the Bavarian derby.

Rekordmeister looked devoid of ideas in the final third until some bit of clever bit of play from Jamal Musiala in the box. Leroy Sane squared the ball in the box after beating his man in the 41st minute. Musiala showed great awareness to pounce on the loose ball and hammered it past the goalkeeper.

Eventful second half in the Bavarian derby

The first 15 minutes of the second half were eventful for both sides for the wrong reasons. Jamal Musiala had to come off due to a hamstring injury, a big blow for Die Roten ahead of crucial games in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Augsburg were reduced to 10 men in the 59th minute as Cedric Zesiger was given a second yellow for a poor tackle.

Bayern made the advantage of extra man count straight away as Harry Kane scored through a bullet header from close range. Michael Olise delivered a pinpoint cross to set up the goal for Kane.

Die Roten pinned Augsburg in their half and dominated the last half hour of the game. Leroy Sane was sent through after a good bit of play from Serge Gnabry on the right flank, but he couldn’t finish the move to double Bayern’s lead. The former Manchester City forward did play a part in Bayern’s third goal in added time to seal the victory.

It was far from a convincing performance from Bayern, but they did enough to get three points. Kompany’s main concern will be Musiala’s injury. From the Bundesliga point of view, Bayern took another big step towards getting the title back to Munich.
