Bayern Munich resumed Bundesliga campaign after a difficult international break with a 3-2 win against St. Pauli at Allianz Arena. It was a much-needed win in the Bundesliga since Bayern had dropped points in the last two league games, allowing Bayer Leverkusen to gain ground on them in the title race.
Courtesy of a 3-2 win against St. Pauli on Saturday, Bayern restored their lead of six points at the top of the points table with seven games to go in the Bundesliga.
The Bavarian club started the game on the front foot in front of their fans. They could have gone ahead inside two minutes as a terrific cross from Michael Olise was headed on target by Leon Goretzka. However, Nikola Vasij did well to deny the German midfielder.
Bayern continued to dominate the game, but they couldn’t muster clear-cut chances. In fact, the next big chance in the game fell to St. Pauli as their skipper Jackson Irvin rattled the frame of the goal from a set-piece in the 15th minute.
Die Roten survived this initial scare and found the breakthrough two minutes later. Jamal Musiala won the ball higher up the pitch and moved it to Olise on the right flank. Harry Kane calmly slotted past Vasij to score his 22nd Bundesliga goal of the season once the French forward found him inside the box. Olise created more problems for the visitors a few minutes later, but his effort didn’t convert into the team’s second goal.
St. Pauli responded strongly after going behind. They shocked Die Roten by scoring the equalizer in the 27th minute. Lack of communication between Eric Dier and Kim Min-jae ensured Elias Sand converted from close range. Bayern piled more pressure on St. Pauli after the equalizer, but they couldn’t get back in the lead before the half-time whistle.
The host created significant chances but lacked a cutting edge in the final third. The majority of the attacking moves were funneling through Olise. The French forward helped Die Roten to restore the lead in the 53rd minute as he found the run of Leroy Sane with a pinpoint pass. The German winger emphatically finished the move to help Bayern get back in a commanding position.
Olise helped Bayern tighten their hold on the game 20 minutes later as he initiated the move for the third goal. He found the run of Kane on the right flank. The English striker squared the ball to Sane, who was in a much better place to score the goal. The German winger duly obliged and doubled Die Roten’s lead.
Bayern had control of the game until they were reduced to ten men when Hiroki Ito suffered a foot injury. The visitors made the most out of the advantage and scored their second goal in the added time.
The hosts managed to see off the final waves of attack from St. Pauli to clinch crucial three points. Ahead of big games in the Bundesliga and Champions League, Vincent Kompany will hope that his team is more clinical at both ends of the pitch.
