There it is, the final whistle at the G Tech stadium.

Chelsea Brentford has ended 0-0, a game that started slow and didn’t improve much.

Enzo Maresca’s decision to rest his top attacking options Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson backfired as the Blues played out a tepid first half, forcing the coach to introduce them both within a few minutes of the second half beginning.

Their presence gave the team a lift, but by that time the pattern of the game was set, and in the spring sunshine Chelsea lapsed back to their winter patterns of slow, dull possession with little threat in behind or out wide.

Blues fans were happy with a midweek win over Tottenham, but after an hour today they were back to bemoaning how much of a chore it was to watch this side. The BBC’s Nizaar Kinsella was on site to hear all of the noises off from the away stand:

“There is no doubt that a large section of match-going Chelsea supporters are finding manager Enzo Maresca’s football increasingly boring,” Kinsella noted.

“After chanting “attack, attack, attack” and “we’ve had a shot”, they were just now chanting for Cole Palmer to come on. They are getting their wish as Palmer and Pedro Neto are coming on after Nicolas Jackson was brought off the bench at half-time.”

It’s certainly not a good sign when your own fans are ironically cheering “we’ve had a shot!!”

Maresca and individual players called out

Kinsella wasn’t the only one to notice this sort of thing. Fans online were laying into the team’s performance and the manager’s decisions, as well as some individual performances.

Christopher Nkunku, who hasn’t looked bothered in about 12 months, and Malo Gusto, were particular targets for ire from the supporters.
