Becky Spencer: “I’m happy to continue the journey with the Club” | OneFootball

Becky Spencer is hoping to make an impact on and off the pitch after she signed a new deal with the Club.

Having joined us from West Ham United in July, 2019, the experienced goalkeeper has been an integral part of our journey in the WSL over the last five seasons, from being in the very first squad in England top flight’s to helping us record a second top six finish in the table last term.

Featuring in our opening six games of the current WSL campaign so far, the 33-year-old put pen to paper on a new contract that will run until June 2026 and she was excited to extend her future with the Club, helping to progress even further on and off the pitch.

“I’m over the moon, I have been here for a long time now so, for me, it was important that I got this done,” she told SPURSPLAY. “Obviously, having conversations with Robert, it’s really pleasing that they want to keep me here so I’m really, really happy.”

“When I first joined, the Club had just got into the WSL, a lot of different players, a lot of different of staff, so the journey we have been on has been incredible and it was something I didn’t want to let go of. I’m happy to continue the journey with the Club, we have come a long way and we still have a long way to go.”

Becky has a wealth of experience in the WSL, from making her senior debut in 2008 before having spells throughout England and America, and she was asked to reflect on her 18-year career to date.

“My journey has been quite up-and-down, I have faced a lot of injuries, not playing and being in and out of teams, I have been in a lot of successful sides, so I have managed to win a lot of things in the WSL which is great,” Becky told us.

“For me, the experience has been great, I have loved every single minute of playing in the WSL and I’m just happy that I can continue that.”

The Jamaica international is now closing in on a century of appearances for the Club and she was asked to explain a favourite moment she has experienced in our colours.

“I have had a lot, so it’s quite hard to choose but, I think, for me, the first ever game I played for the Club, which was at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea, no one knew what to expect from us at that moment.

“There was a lot of supporters and that’s when we kind of arrived. It was difficult for us during that pre-season to then turning up and losing just one-nil was something we were proud of at the time and, now, we’re competing against those teams.”

As she now competes in her sixth season with the Club, Becky is hoping to use her decade of experience to help the younger players and continue the development of the Club in the years to come.

“Throughout my career, I have always wanted to be at a club where once I do finish my playing career, I can leave it in a better state than it was,” she added.

“So, for me, not only on the pitch but also off the pitch, I hope to help the youngsters and everyone else coming through, so when my time is done, I can leave feeling happy.”
