Behind Daniele de Rossi’s Roma sack: poor results and bad relations with higher-ups

Daniele de Rossi has now been sacked by Serie A giants Roma, who were winless in four games in the league and have decided to make the abrupt decision of axing the Italian despite handing him a new deal in the summer.

The decision is seen as harsh, especially considering we are only four games into the season but the rot was probably settling in before the end of the previous season as results hadn’t gone to plan even to the end of the 2023/24 season. They had won just once in 11 games in the league.

But Roma have been a club that have attracted attention in recent months for their activity in the transfer market, as they made some big moves. Paulo Dybala stayed at the club after an exit that seemed on the verge, with the club moving on club’s graduate Edoardo Bove and Nicola Zalewski excluded from the project after a move to Galatasaray didn’t go through.

There has been talk of the fact that De Rossi didn’t have the best relationship with new sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, who has been vital in signing a lot of players in the summer. There was also speculation that the Italian wasn’t on board with the decisions made about Dybala and tensions were just rising in the background.

TMW state that relations had been ‘tense’ for a long time and a meeting took place between the Friedkins, De Rossi and club CEO Lina Souloukou yesterday. The window was seen as a roller coaster and the results didn’t go their way on the pitch either, leading to the Friedkins siding with the CEO. Souloukou’s relations with De Rossi aren’t great either, leading to the manager being left isolated in the situation.

There is still said to be surprise at the club regarding the decision, with Stefano Pioli and Max Allegri said to be candidates.
