It was a good Saturday for Toronto FC and that was exemplified by Federico Bernardeschi in his post-match presser.
On Saturday, May 10, Toronto FC finally earned its first home win of the season, ending an abysmal run at BMO Field that dated back to last season. While still near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, the win over D.C. United has increased the positivity around the club for the time being.
The difference maker in the contest ended up being a goal that made you look twice when it happened: Lorenzo Insigne scored with his head. A darting run from Theo Corbeanu kicked off the play, with the Canadian delivering a perfect cross into the middle, and Insigne met the ball with his head.
Insigne also played his part in the second goal of the evening, crossing the ball into the mixer in front of D.C.'s goal, forcing defender Lucas Bartlett to score on his own net. It's a long way to the top for Toronto FC at the moment, but having one of your designated players find his scoring boots can only mean good things.
Post-match, it was a different Italian to speak in front of the microphone, with Federico Bernardeschi being the player chosen to speak to the press on Saturday.
Given how the season has gone to date for Toronto FC, a very relieved Federico Bernardeschi spoke about the result for the hosts.
"Today was so important. Honestly, we deserve it. Now we have to push it and keep going like that. [This win] is important for the confidence of the team. In front of our fans, this stadium was amazing today. "Federico Bernardeschi
After speaking about the importance of getting the metaphorical monkey off their backs, Bernardeschi explained how influential Lorenzo Insigne was on the day. A chuckling Bernardeschi also told the press what he joked about to Insigne after he scored.
"I'm very happy for him. He deserved it. He scored with his head. I made a little bit of a joke with [Insigne]. I said to him, I expect everything [of him] but to score with his head? No...[laughs]... but he did so, we are happy about him and he has to be happy."Federico Bernardeschi
After everything that happened in the off-season between Insigne and Toronto FC, his goal and performance against D.C. United would be an excellent turning point between the two parties.
