Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku has been one of the stars of the 2024-25 League One season in spite of his injury issues, and he hit the back of the net against champions elect Birmingham City this past week.

Poku grabbed his 12th goal of the League One campaign against Blues in midweek, bringing his total goal contributions for the season to 20 in just 24 games.

After defeating Poku and Peterborough 2-1 in the League, Birmingham will get another look at the winger this weekend, when the two sides go head-to-head in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley, where he will be looking to showcase his talents to a wider audience - especially with his contract expiring this summer at Posh.

Kwame Poku backed to make step up to Championship if Birmingham City make their move

Poku has worked his way up from non-league to become an impressive threat in the EFL, firstly with Colchester United and then Peterborough.

A one-time international for Ghana, Poku has seen his 2024/25 campaign impacted by injuries – not that you could tell with his 12 goals and eight assists in 24 League One appearances.

Poku’s celebrations for his equaliser on Tuesday night raised a few eyebrows amongst both Peterborough and Birmingham fans - after briefly halting the Blues’ promotion party with his goal, the winger gestured to the away end full of Birmingham fans before pointing to the name on the back of his shirt.

His performance, and celebration to boot, saw numerous social media calls from Blues fans for the club to make their move this summer for the right-winger.

The 23-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, but if he moves to another English club it would incur a compensation fee for his new team to pay Peterborough.

Football League World's resident Blues expert Mike Gibbs has certainly been impressed by what he has seen from Poku this campaign, and believes his side should look to bring the winger to Birmingham.

Asked whether he would take the Peterborough winger at St Andrew’s, Mike told Football League World: “I think Poku is an interesting one.

“I've seen him a couple of times and I'll be honest, I do definitely rate him.

“I think he's got something that a lot of other players don't bring.

“I mean, his goal and assist return in what's been quite a broken season for him injury-wise has been pretty outstanding - 20 goal contributions in 24 games is right up there.

“I like his athleticism, I like his directness, and I do think he could step up as well.

“For someone who's out of contract, I think subject to a decent compensation package - we wouldn’t be paying significant sums of money - I think he would be a great addition to the squad.”

Kwame Poku would add something “different” to Birmingham City than Kieran Dowell & Keshi Anderson

Not only does Mike rate Kwame Poku as a player, but he believes the Peterborough man could give Birmingham something different in the wide positions.

Mike highlighted how Poku’s direct style of play differed drastically to current Blues duo Keshi Anderson and Kieran Dowell, who are featuring out wide but are a different profile of player.

He continued: “I think I've said before, I think the attacking positions and those wide positions are somewhere where we're probably weakest.

“So I think he would add a depth to that department, and a really different sort of dimension, a different attacking threat.

“We've got a lot of players, if I think about Keshi Anderson the sort of player that you wouldn't call him an out-and-out winger, he comes in off the wing.

“Kieran Dowell as well, they're almost number 10s playing on the wing at times, so Poku would bring you that directness that I definitely think we are missing.”
