Anderlecht have been dealt a heavy blow with the news that Jan Vertonghen will miss the next two matches. The side face Genk and Club Brugge as they look to secure their first title in over five years. Former Tottenham and Benfica defender Vertonghen has been a leader at the back all season and the club have benefited from his experience during crucial moments. The club only has three recognised central defenders, with Zeno Debast now having to form a new partnership with Argentine defender Federico Gattoni. The on loan Sevilla defender has only made six appearances this season, playing 90 minutes just twice.
While this is certainly bad news for Anderlecht, for the Belgian national team there is some better news. The injury is not as bad as was originally feared and the veteran defender should be able to represent the Red Devils at the upcoming Euros in Germany. Vertonghen is one of the few left from the so called Golden Generation which did not decide to retire following a poor 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Vertonghen will be back for the clubs final game against Antwerp at the end of May. He will hope that the side can remain in the title race till then. At the moment, they are two points behind leaders Club Brugge after a 0-0 draw with city rivals Union St Gilloise at the weekend.
