Lewis Ferguson is not expected to be back on the pitch until 2025, but Bologna have still decided to extend his contract to June 2029.

The Scotland international sustained a serious anterior cruciate knee ligament injury in April that forced him to miss the EURO 2024 tournament.

It is also ruling him out of the opening phase of the Champions League for his club.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, Bologna have decided to extend his contract by two years to June 2029, giving Ferguson the security he needs to focus only on his full recovery.

The 25-year-old midfielder was a key figure in their push to fifth place in Serie A last season, which was worth a spot in the Champions League thanks to Italy’s overall coefficient ranking.

He had already renewed the contract to June 2027 with an option for another year, signing the deal back in July 2023.

The new agreement was effectively confirmed by his father Derek Ferguson during the Let Me Be Frank podcast.

The player has been working diligently in training at the Isokinetic centre, so in just over a month’s time should be able to resume training alongside his Bologna teammates.
