The Inter Milan veteran decided to hang up his boots on the international level in August.

Born in Morges, the goalkeeper, who took his first football steps in Basel, made his senior debut for Switzerland in 2012.

One of the longest-serving members of the Swiss national team, Yann Sommer, racked up 94 caps for his country.

Remarkably, the aging ace had defended his country’s colors for 12 years

Moreover, Sommer’s stats for Switzerland were nothing short of outstanding.

Indeed, he was among the architects of the Swiss’ rise to prominence after the nation’s long-standing struggles at major tournaments.

Across 94 appearances for his national team, the 35-year-old registered 35 clean sheets.

On top of that, he conceded an average of only 0.97 goals per game.

However, after helping Switzerland to the EURO 2024 quarter-finals, the Inter star decided to retire.

Ndoye, who was superb in the summer tournament in Germany, has the potential to lead a new generation of young Swiss talents.

Yet, he has remained to pick up the slack after Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabian Schar followed Sommer into the retirement camp.

Losing three such influential figures in a relatively short period has devastated Murat Yakin’s team.

“Undoubtedly, it is a loss for the team. But we have to keep working and improving,” Ndoye said.

“It was a great honor to play with the three of them.

“But retirements are part of sport and must be accepted.”

Meanwhile, Ndoye also praised former Inter forward Shaqiri for his game-changing ability.

“Shaqiri was able to change an entire game in a moment. I was able to learn a lot from him.”
