Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor says that her focus is on performance, not the Barclays Women’s Super League table.

The Blues return to league action following the winter break with a tricky fixture at West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

Chelsea currently hold a six-point advantage at the top of the table but head coach Bompastor says that her side’s lead counts for nothing at this stage and that the focus is on performance.

“There are still a lot of games to be played in the second half of the season,” Bompastor said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “After the game against West Ham, it will be mid-season but we just want to take it game-by-game at the moment.

“Yes, we are leading by six points and if we keep this gap, it will be good but we are only focusing on it game-by-game, not focusing too much on how many points are between us and the other teams.

“Our focus is on the way that we want to play to make sure we create more chances in games. Every game will be difficult and there are enough points left for teams to come back and win titles. This is not what we want, so we will be really focused on how we can perform in every game to make sure we keep this distance from them. It will be difficult for sure.”

Opponents West Ham United find themselves in 10th position in the league table. Bompastor recognises the fact that The Hammers are improving week-on-week and cannot be underestimated.

She said “West Ham are in a position in the table that doesn’t reflect the quality that they have in their squad. I think they have really good players.

“We just need to be aware of the fact that if we don’t play with a lot of intensity in the game and with all of our quality, we will be in trouble. We are ready for that.”

It will be a busy week for Chelsea with The Blues scheduled to contest three matches. Bompastor says that her side are ready for the challenge.

She said “We have the experience. Being Chelsea, we are used to playing a lot of games. Three games in a week is something that we really like, we like to play games, so we are ready for that.

“When you get into the second half of the season, you just reflect on what you need from the physical, technical and tactical aspects to be ready to play one game or three games a week. We know our plan and our schedule and we are ready to play every game.”

Chelsea’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at West Ham United kicks-off at 3pm on Sunday afternoon.
