Borussia Dortmund face Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal with several key players injured, the latest of whom was Nico Schlotterbeck who fell to a serious injury only earlier this month.

While the men in yellow were already depleted of resources in the first leg, they appear to have suffered a new blow just ahead of the game in Germany.

After all, SPORT bring to light that Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can did not participate in the team’s final training session ahead of the game and trained individually.

Captain ruled out?

The 31-year-old star has been an undisputed starter in Nico Kovac’s side all season and even put up a good show when his side took on Barcelona in Spain last week.

He even completed all 90 minutes in Der Klassiker midweek and was set to face Barcelona in the second leg. His not participating in the final training, however, does not appear to be a promising sign for Kovac.

As it stands, it looks unlikely that he will play any part against the Catalans in the reverse fixture and the situation could not have got any worse for Borussia Dortmund who already find themselves four goals short of Barcelona.

Both teams will take to the field tomorrow night at the Signal Iduna Park and it will be Dortmund who are under pressure to score as Barcelona enter the game with a comfortable lead.

Can’s availability will only be known for sure when Kovac faces the media later today. For the captain and best-remaining defender to be unavailable against Barcelona, after all, may well kill any remote hope the German side had of mounting a comeback.
