As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Brentford are set to seal two separate deals for Sepp Van den Berg from Liverpool and Gustavo Nunes from Grêmio.
The latter will join Brentford for a €12million fee, with a 20% sell-on clause to the Brasileiro Série A club also inserted into the deal.
An 18-year-old Brazilian winger, Nunes only made his senior league debut in March of this year, and has since gone on to score three and assist one in 20 appearances, whilst also impressing with two goals and one assist in just 214 minutes in the Copa Libertadores.
As for Van den Berg, despite demanding interest from Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, the 22-year-old is said to have agreed to The Bees’ proposal and is expected to have his medical later today upon signing a deal with the side, which will see Liverpool receive a £25m package for the player.
Having moved to Liverpool for €1.9m from PEC Zwolle in July 2019, the centre-back has only made four senior appearances for the Anfield club, but featured significantly for their youth side before gaining valuable experience on loan at Preston North End in the EFL Championship, as well as at Schalke and, most recently, FSV Mainz in the German Bundesliga.
It was the latter club where the Dutchman particularity thrived, playing more league minutes than any of his teammates and making the third most clearances, join-most blocks, and winning more aerial duels than any other defender in the German top flight – in addition to scoring three goals.
As such, having predominantly been deployed on the right of centre of a defensive back three, Van den Berg will be a valuable addition to Thomas Frank’s side as they look to bolster their side and improve on their 15th place league finish last season.
In addition to these two deals, Brentford have also signed Liverpool’s Fábio Carvalho for €23m, and broken their club-record fee for striker Igor Thiago from Club Brugge for €33m.
Thiago was seemingly brought in as a replacement for Ivan Toney ahead of his expected departure from the Gtech Community Stadium, however, the Brazilian is now unavailable until at least December with a knee injury, and so Toney is still yet to depart. Though, due to his contract expiring next June and his value decreasing, the England international is still expected to be sold before the transfer window closes, with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli currently the most likely buyers.
