Brentford defender Rico Henry could sit out the rest of the season after picking up what is suspected to be an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, The Athletic reports.

The 26-year-old suffered an awkward fall in the 39th minute of Brentford’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United over the weekend after a collision with Magpies captain Kieran Trippier.

The defender, who was a target for Manchester United over the summer, was seen holding his left knee in agony, prompting referee Craig Pawson to call for a stretcher.

However, Henry ultimately did not need the stretcher as he left the field aided by two members of Brentford’s medical team, making his way to the dressing room.

The left-back was replaced by Mads Roerslav, and it appears the Denmark international could get a run in the first team, with Henry suspected to have picked up an ACL injury.

In a post-match interview, Brentford manager Thomas Frank responded to an inquiry about Henry’s situation, suggesting the Englishman would be assessed on Monday.

Further scans have revealed the extent of the damage, with Henry set to embark on an eight-month spell in the treatment room, prompting suggestions he could have played his last game for the Bees this season.

Henry was a crucial part of Frank’s squad last season, contributing two assists in 39 appearances across all competitions as Brentford came within touching distance of European qualification.

They ultimately finished ninth in the Premier League with two points separating them from the Europa Conference League spot.

Henry has already been a familiar figure in the Brentford line-up this season, starting all five games for the Bees, with Frank’s side sitting 11th with six points to their name.

Henry’s injury will come as a huge blow considering he is the longest-serving player of their current squad and one of the first names on Frank’s team sheet.

This is the second time the defender has suffered an ACL problem over the course of his career after damaging his right knee in September 2017.
