A tough test on the south coast for Erik ten Hag’s inconsistent side

Manchester United know they must improve against Brighton if they are to maintain a winning start to the Premier League season.

A frustratingly familiar performance against Fulham on the opening night of the new campaign saw United grind out a 1-0 win thanks to Joshua Zirkzee’s late winner, before Brighton dispelled much of their pre-season concerns with a resounding away win at Everton in manager Fabian Hurzeler’s first game in charge.

Erik ten Hag warned ahead of the game that his players were not fully ready for the new season and so it proved, despite the points of the board, and will hope his squad shake off some of that rustiness on the south coast this weekend.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Brighton vs Manchester United is scheduled for a 12.30pm BST kick-off on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

The match will take place at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton vs Manchester United team news

Brighton are still juggling a length injury list, but hope to have Evan Ferguson, Pervis Estupinan and Tariq Lamptey in contention for a place in the squad.

However, Bart Verbruggen, Solomon March, Julio Enciso and Yankuba Minteh - who was forced off in the win over Everton - are expected to be ruled out.

Man Utd are fairing little better on the injury front, with Victor Lindelof and Jadon Sancho the only two of seven nearing returns.

Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw are not expected back until after the September international break, while Tyrell Malacia and Leny Yoro are looking at November returns.

Brighton vs Manchester United prediction

Man Utd appear to have improved little from last season, though it remains early days in the new campaign. Brighton, meanwhile, look to have bought into their manager’s approach well over the summer, though were helped by Ashley Young’s red card to run out 3-0 winners at Everton.

United will pose a tougher test than the Toffees, though Brighton look like a potentially trickier opponent than Fulham. The Seagulls have got the better of Ten Hag plenty of times - winning four of five league games between the sides - and can continue that run on Saturday.

Brighton to win, 2-1.
