Bristol City could have another Jonathan Kodjia situation on their hands with Fally Mayulu: View | OneFootball

Bristol City are on the verge of signing Fally Mayulu and there are similarities to Jonathan Kodjia's arrival nine years ago

Bristol City look set to complete their first signing of the summer transfer window, with it reported that Rapid Wien striker Fally Mayulu will undergo a medical at Ashton Gate this weekend.

Bristol Live have reported the 21-year-old will join the Robins in a deal worth £2.5million should the medical pass with no hiccups, and Mayulu will become the Robins' most expensive signing since Nakhi Wells joined in January 2020.

Mayulu won't be a player that too many Bristol City supporters know much about, having played all his senior football in Austria, but being an unknown quantity hasn't stopped signings from being a success at Ashton Gate in the past.

The Robins' fanbase only need to cast their minds back to the summer of 2015 when an unknown striker from Ligue 2 by the name of Jonathan Kodjia moved to BS3, and if Mayulu is anywhere near as successful as Kodjia was, then Bristol CIty would have signed a gem.

Admittedly, Kodjia was a little bit older than 21-year-old Mayulu when he moved to Ashton Gate nine years ago, and he had scored more goals in Ligue 2 than Mayulu has in Austria, but there are plenty of similarities between the pair.

Kodjia was by no means a household name when he moved to Bristol City, and there would have been plenty of supporters wondering who he was, like they are now with Mayulu, but it didn't take long for the Ivorian striker to introduce himself.

The Robins forked out £2milllion to sign Kodjia from Ligue 2 side Angers, not too dissimilar to the £2.5million fee that has been reported for Mayulu, and the Ivorian striker was a revelation in his one season at Ashton Gate.

In total, Kodjia scored 19 times in 48 appearances in his only full season at the club, with 18 of those goals coming in the Championship, making him the division's fourth-highest scorer.

He impressed so much that he earned a move to Aston Villa in the summer of 2016, with Villa forking out an initial £11million fee to sign him, which could have risen to £15million.

Whilst it was a shame to lose Kodjia after just one season, it was clearly an incredible bit of business from the Robins, and it made them a huge profit.

The Ivorian was an unknown quantity when he arrived, but he found the back of the net on a regular basis and earned the club big money. If Mayulu can do the same, then his arrival looks a seriously smart piece of business.

Bristol City fans will be hoping that Fally Mayulu is a hidden gem

Just like Kodjia's, Robins fans won't know too much about Mayulu, but the fact the club are so keen to sign him clearly suggests that he's got something about him.

Mayulu has spent just one season at Rapid Wien where he scored 11 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions, not an outstanding return, but certainly not awful, and it must be remembered that he's only 21.

The Frenchman should offer Bristol City something different as he's 6'4", so he's certainly tall, and should be able to hold the ball up well and be an aerial threat.

Given his age, it's perhaps unrealistic to expect Mayulu to come in and make the same sort of impact that Kodjia did in his first season, but as long as he shows some promise and chips in with a few goals, it'll be a successful first season at Ashton Gate for the 21-year-old.

With his potential, there's no reason why he can't improve over the course of the next couple of seasons at Bristol City and be sold for a profit in the years to come, just like Kodjia was.
