The Hornets have the option to extend the forward’s stay for another year due to a clause included in this deal.

The forward began his career at Watford and featured on four occasions for the club before sealing a permanent switch to Peterborough United in 2013.

Certainly no stranger to life in the Championship, Assombalonga has played in this division for the Hornets, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough during his career.

Following a spell with Boro, the 30-year-old joined Turkish outfit Adana Demirspor in 2021.

Assombalonga went on to score 18 goals in the 54 appearances that he made for Adana Demirspor before his contract was terminated by mutual consent yesterday ahead of his move to Watford.

The forward could feature for the Hornets this weekend when his side take on Reading in the Championship.

After his return to Watford was announced by the club, Assombalonga opted to share a message with the club’s fans on Instagram.

“Buzzing to be back home.

“Let’s get to work!!”

The Verdict

This could turn out to be a very clever bit of business by Watford as Assombalonga knows exactly what it takes to compete at this level.

During his career to date, the forward has managed to find the back of the net on 75 occasions in the Championship while he has also chipped in with seven assists.

By hitting the ground running in the second-tier for Watford, he could help the club in their quest to secure a place in the play-offs.

Assombalonga’s arrival may also force the likes of Keinan Davis and Henrique Araujo to step up their performance levels which in turn could have a positive impact on the club’s fortunes.

Davis has scored four goals for Watford this season while Araujo made his debut for the club in their defeat to Middlesbrough last weekend after sealing a temporary switch from Benfica.
