Burnley have bounced around the leagues over the years, and they've picked up some well-known supporters along the way.

Burnley Football Club is over 142 years old, and is known as one of English football's most historically important sporting institutions. Through that varied, yet illustrious past, the club has acquired many supporters, old and young, and a few very famous faces along the way.

The Clarets have recently become something of a 'yo-yo' club, promoted to the Premier League and relegated back to the Championship with recurring regularity.

The Lancashire outfit is one of a select group of clubs that have won each of the nation's top four divisions, and that success, along with other factors such as locality and identity, has drawn some notable figures into being fans of the team.

Here we look at four such individuals well-known in their respective fields who keep a keen eye on the Turf Moor clubs' fortunes.

James Anderson

English cricketing legend James Anderson is one of the most famous people to originate from Burnley.

42-year-old Anderson, known affectionately as 'Jimmy' more than James, has had a glittering career for county (Lancashire), and most notably, country, as a masterful swing bowler.

Regarded as one of the sport's greatest ever, the veteran holds the record as the highest wicket-taking fast bowler at test match level, amassing an incredible 704 dismissals in the 5-day format of the game.

While Anderson also contributed in both One Day Internationals and T20, too, it was Test cricket where he made the largest impact, though having just finished playing for the England national side in his early 40s, the Burnley native now has more time to follow the Clarets more regularly.

The quiet, yet popular athlete was awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Burnley in 2011 and an OBE in 2016, courtesy of the Queen's 2015 Birthday Honours.

Alastair Campbell

67-year-old Alastair Campbell was a famous figure in various fields over the last quater of a century or so.

A keen Claret, who is often pictured at Turf Moor or on Burnley away days, is a former journalist, author and broadcaster. He's also known for being a political activist, playing a part in Labour Party proceedings between 1994 and 2003.

While anyone in politics is likely to divide opinion among the general public, Campbell's devotion to his football club is far from questionable, and we can expect to see him at Burnley matches long into the future.

King Charles III

As far as public profiles go, it doesn't get much bigger than the King of England, and as revealed by FourFourTwo, King Charles III, at the time a Prince, told a 2012 public reception that he was a supporter of the Clarets.

While his son, Prince William is known to be a keen follower of Aston Villa and an Ambassador to the FA, his father's interest and allegiance in the game are less documented.

However, again using quotes from the FourFourTwo publication we learn why His Majesty follows the Turf Moor club, with the King commenting that "Burnley has been through some very challenging times, and I'm trying to find ways of helping to regenerate and raise aspirations in that part of the world."

The King is currently battling with cancer, and while he'll clearly have a multitude of more concerning matters to deal with, he'll be pleased with Burnley's solid start to the 2024/25 season under Scott Parker,

Sam Aston

31-year-old actor Sam Aston is a recognisable face on British television screens, having played the role of Chesney Brown in the timeless Lancashire soap Coronation Street.

After roles as an extra in various shows from the age of five, Aston became a permanent fixture on the cobbles, taking the role of Chesney in 2003 as a ten-year-old, continuing to play the character to this day.

Winning many acting awards in that time, including Best Newcomer at the National Television Awards, Aston is known to be a long-term supporter of the Clarets, having followed them through some memorable successes in recent years.
