Roma have joined the race to sign Burnley striker Wout Weghorst this summer.

Serie A giants Roma have joined Ajax in the race for Burnley striker Wout Weghorst, who is thought to be available for €10 million (£8.5m).

That is according to Tuttosport, via LaRoma24, which states that his exit is likely in this transfer window, and Burnley could be looking for around €10 million for the forward.

It is expected to be a busy summer of activity at Turf Moor over the coming weeks as the club adjusts to life back in the second tier.

The Clarets have been searching for several weeks for a new manager but that has now been concluded with Scott Parker tasked with leading the club back to the Premier League.

Parker has only been in the hot seat for a couple of days, so he will likely want to get to know some of his players before deciding on their future.

But it appears as though that isn’t the case for Weghorst, as a deal for his exit looks likely to happen at some point this summer, with Roma now the latest team to be linked.

Weghorst joined Burnley in January 2022 from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, and while he had a small impact right away, the rest of his time at the club has been disappointing.

The forward has had loan spells at Besiktas, Manchester United, and Hoffenheim, and with him now in the final 12 months of his contract at Burnley, a permanent exit appears likely.

It was reported by Fabrizio Romano in June that Weghorst was in talks with Dutch side Ajax over a summer switch.

The transfer expert claimed at the time that the talks were advanced, and all parties were confident of a deal being agreed.

However, Ajax may now face some stiff competition, as according to Tuttosport, via Roma24, Serie A giants Roma are also interested in signing the Dutchman.

The report states that an exit is likely, and clubs are considering the striker as an option, with Roma keen on the player.

It goes on to add that Roma are believed to be behind Ajax in the race, but the Italian side could still make a move for the player.

The report adds that Burnley are looking to try and get around €10 million for Weghorst, but they are willing to negotiate on the price.

As previously stated, Burnley signed Weghorst in January 2022, but in the two and a half years since, most of his football has been away from Turf Moor.

The Dutchman played for the Clarets in the first six months at the club, as former manager Sean Dyche tried to keep the club in the top flight.

But since then, Weghorst has spent two seasons on loan at three clubs, with his latest loan being at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

The forward has played just 20 times for the Lancashire side, scoring twice and recording three assists.

It now appears as though he is unlikely to add to that tally, as an exit from Turf Moor looks to be on the cards.

Weghorst needs to leave Burnley this summer

For whatever reason, Weghorst’s move to Burnley has not gone to plan.

It appears that the Clarets are also willing to let the player leave this summer, so it is just about the club working on a deal that they believe is right for them and the player agreeing to personal terms.

Either way, Weghorst knows his time at Burnley is up, and he will be hoping that once the Euros are over, he can conclude his transfer as quickly as possible and find a club where he is going to play as much football as he can.
