Leicester City have confirmed the signing of Brazilian winger Tete on a short-term deal until the end of the season, who could prove to be a valuable addition for Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irish manager has been on the hunt for attacking recruits as he aims to stave off the threat of relegation after the Foxes have endured a poor start to the season.

They are also eyeing a deal for Leeds United winger Jack Harrison, so it could be a busy few days for them as the transfer window draws to a close.

Leicester have reportedly fought off interest from West Ham, Leeds United and Brentford to win the race for Tete, who has been in excellent form for Lyon this season.

The 22-year-old has been on loan at the Ligue 1 side from Shakhtar Donetsk since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with FIFA allowing foreign players to suspend their deals with clubs in the country.

FIFA’s ruling has complicated the move as it expires at the end of the season, meaning Rodgers will only be able to sign Tete until the summer initially but is expected to make it permanent if his spell goes well.

Overall, the attacker has featured 30 times for Lyon since joining them in March last year, scoring eight goals and making 10 assists, giving him an impressive average of 0.6 goal contributions per game.

Tete is also versatile, with the ability to play on either wing, as a second striker or as an attacking midfielder, so he will provide cover in several areas for Rodgers if the deal is completed as expected.

He has also featured twice for Brazil’s under-23 team, so there is no doubting his quality and potential to get even better.

Meanwhile, Leicester may still do more business this month after tabling a £20m bid for Leeds winger Harrison. However, they still have more work to do to get a deal over the line.

The Englishman scored a fantastic goal in Leeds’ 3-1 FA Cup victory over Accrington Stanley on Saturday, which prompted Whites boss Jesse Marsch to break the silence regarding his future. He also hugged Harrison after he was substituted.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, he said:

“All I’ll say is I really like Jack, first as a person. He’s one of the most incredible people I’ve ever coached.

“We like him here. We want to keep him. He’s performing really well.

“Getting him fit and healthy has been a big key. He’s got flexibility in the way he plays. I was just happy for him, with all the things that are circulating, he was so clear and sharp and good on the day. So that was the biggest reason for the hug.”

With that in mind, Leicester may need to offer more than £20m for Harrison to get a January deal over the line.

Despite this setback, Tete certainly has the ability to have a real impact on the Foxes’ season. They currently find themselves just one point outside the relegation zone.
