Cruz Azul will seek to win a record-tying seventh Concacaf Champions Cup and continue a Mexican dominance in the tournament. Whitecaps FC will seek to become the first club from its nation to lift the Concacaf Champions Cup.

Ahead, we examine the previous meetings between Canada and Mexico in the Champions Cup Final.

2014–15: Club América 5-3 CF Montréal

CF Montréal, then known as the Montreal Impact, became the first Canadian club to reach the Concacaf Champions Cup Final in the 2014/15 edition to face Club América for the trophy.

L'Impact took a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the historic Estadio Azteca. Ignacio Piatti struck in the 16’ to earn the lead and secure an away goal. Oribe Peralta answered for the Mexicans in the 88’ to deny the victory.

A record 61,004 attendance for professional soccer in Montréal awaited in the decisive second leg. Andrés Romero scored in the 8’ as the home fans went into halftime dreaming of the title. Darío Benedetto had other ideas, scoring a hat-trick with goals in the 50', 67', and 81', with Peralta adding one in the 65’. Jack McInerney struck a second for the home side in the 88’ but the comeback would fall short as Club América secured a then-record-tying sixth title with a 5-3 win on aggregate.

2018: CD Guadalajara 3-3 Toronto FC (GDL 4–2 on PKs)

Toronto FC was the second Canadian club to reach the final, doing so in the 2018 edition against CD Guadalajara, the first champion in the history of the competition.

Rodolfo Pizarro placed the Mexican side in front in the 2’ of the first leg at BMO Field in Toronto. Jonathan Osorio tied for the hosts in the 19’, but Alan Pulido would restore the Chivas lead in the 72’ to take a lead in the opening encounter.

Orbelín Pineda extended the Guadalajara lead in the 19’ to start the second leg at the Estadio Akron in Zapopan, Jalisco. The Reds would not wane, however, with Jozy Altidore pulling TFC within one in the 25’ and Sebastian Giovinco striking in the 44’ to tie on aggregate. With the Canadian side winning 2-1 on the road, the match ended 3-3 on aggregate and tied on away goals.

A penalty shootout would be played to decide the winner. The Mexican side was clinical while Toronto failed on two kicks, marking for a 4-2 win on PKs and a second title for CD Guadalajara.
