Cardiff City will be making early preparations for life in League One after their relegation from the Championship.
The Bluebirds have returned to the third tier of English football for the first time in 22 years, with the Welsh side’s fate all sealed after their draw with West Brom on the penultimate game of the campaign.
In a disastrous turn of events, Cardiff will be tasked with gaining immediate promotion back to the second tier, although it will be difficult with the likes of Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United failing to get straight back up after their relegations in the 2023-24 term.
Inevitable cuts will have to be made after another relegation, with several high-earners needing to leave the club in order for them to be financially competitive and have the best possible chance of fighting for those automatic promotion places.
One player who fits into that category is Callum Robinson, whose injury-stricken season was a major factor to Cardiff’s slump towards the bottom of the table.
Despite netting 12 times this season, Robinson missed the last four games of the campaign, which was hugely detrimental to the team, and he is a player likely to leave the club and chase a return to Championship life.
FLW’s Cardiff City fan pundit has discussed whether Robinson has a future beyond this summer and what the club’s approach should be heading into the transfer window.
Speaking to Football League World, Cardiff City fan pundit Matt Hall believes Callum Robinson’s time is up at Cardiff, but that he won’t be short of Championship takers due to his vast experience in the second tier.
Matt said: “I do think Callum Robinson will leave in the summer. I think he’s one of the players on the older side of things and will want to stay in the Championship.
“I think Wrexham or Preston are the two that come to mind for me to buy him. Preston are very much in the category of liking an experienced Championship-proven striker, and he would be going to quote on quote home where he started after being released from Aston Villa.
“Wrexham is another obvious one. They’ve been linked already, and I think they’d be someone to go for an experienced striker like we’ve seen with Paul Mullin and Steven Fletcher, so they’ll want to go one step up by buying an experienced Championship-proven striker, so I think those kind of clubs will want him.
“He's (Robinson) been a brilliant signing for us, a bit up and down but for the most part brilliant, so we wish him well.”
Callum Robinson is still a forward who can do an effective job in the second tier, with his goalscoring exploits clear to see wherever he has played.
The 30-year-old previously helped fire West Brom back to the Premier League under Slaven Bilic after a successful loan period as well as scoring five times in the top-flight, while the frontman reached double figures for goals in two separate Championship seasons with Preston.
The Lilywhites narrowly survived relegation after a capitulation of form under Paul Heckingbottom, and his side may profit from someone with the experience of leading the line and knowing where the back of the net is on a regular basis. It wouldn’t take much time for Robinson to settle in either, given the frontman created a special bond between himself and the Deepdale faithful from his three spells in Lancashire.
Meanwhile, it’s unclear where Wrexham will finish on their return to the Championship, but they will need players with second tier know-how in most positions in order to make a fist of it. Robinson’s added goals could be very key to Wrexham at least steering clear of relegation danger, while a promotion push could be on the cards if the remainder of the squad settles and adapts to Championship life.
Provided he can keep himself fit, Robinson will be an asset wherever he goes, and it’s difficult to see him not earning a move back to the Championship and after his previous pedigree in the division.
